What's Near-By

The Necessities of Life

Although The Pinehills is not close to everything, it's not too far from everything either. Here's is an introduction to the area's shopping, dining and entertainment. You'll find that most things are a fifteen (15) to twenty (20) minute drive.

Where is Great Island?

Great Island is located across the road from The Pinehills Golf Club.

DIRECTIONS

Take EXIT 3 (CLARK RD) off of State Route 3 (Pilgrim Highway).
Great Island is one (1) mile east on BEAVER DAM RD.
(CLARK RD. becomes BEAVER DAM RD.).
The entrance to the community is on your right (Little Island).

MapQuest Directions

Rumor has it that the main entrance will be moved from Little Island to the construction entrance (Great Island) when construction is complete.

Editors Note: This rumor is probably not true considering that The Pinehills actually owns Great Island (the road) and that The Pinehills 'Rebecca's Landing'  District entrance is along Great Island (the road).

Also, considering that the entrance to Great Island's 'Looking Glass' neighborhood is along Great Island (the road) before the Pracilla's Landing entrance, the Great Island entrance marker would be inappropriate anywhere along Great Island (the road).

Streets

Once you've found the entrance, you'll find that the streets inside the community are winding, most of them end in a cul-de-sac and there are no exit signs. Without a street map you're bound to get lost.

What's Near-By

  • Great Island Pond - This 77 acre pond, defining the eastern extent of the community, is used for fishing and boating. Other than the community, almost all of the remaining land surrounding the pond is forest land owned by the Town of Plymouth and used by kids on four-wheelers and adults in off-road vehicles.
  • The Manomet Landfill is just north of Great Island (on the site currently operating as the Manomet Recycling Facility). The landfill was operated as an open dump beginning in 1955 but ceased operations in October 1998 and is partially capped at present. Groundwater flow beneath the landfill is to the northeast.
  • Little Island Pond Conservation Area lies just north of Great Island, abutting the Manomet Landfill. This 122-acre property has good hiking trails, varied wildlife and good fishing.
  • Clam Pudding Pond This historic pond, which defines the south-west extent of the community, is accessible from Old Sandwich Road.
  • The Pinehills Wastewater Treatment Facility is located within Great Island, south of the Fox Hollow neighborhood.
  • The Pinehills Water Supply Facility is located across the street from the community.
  • The New Bedford Gas & Edison Light Company power lines run straight down the center of the community.

Geography Matters

It may not have been your favorite subject in high school, but when you're living in it, geography matters. Here is a closer look at Great Island's geography, including its extent, development, terrain, habitat and the land use around the community.
