The Pinehills Waste Water Treatment
Do you know where your wastewater goes?
The Pinehills owns its own wastewater treatment facility with an (2008) annual operating budget of almost $1 million dollars.
The Pinehills contracts the operation of the facility.
The Pinehills Waste Water Treatment Facility (WWTF) uses a completely enclosed treatment process and the plant has an odor control system. The wastewater is treated and discharged into the groundwater. The facility is located within the Great Island extent just south of the Fox Hollow neighborhood.

Groundwater Monitoring
The Pinehills regularly monitors groundwater down gradient of the facility for the presence of nitrogen and phosphorous.
Here are the groundwater monitoring locations (Horsley & Witten, Inc. Sandwich, MA) within Great Island, including the interceptor wells used to irrigate the golf course, drinking water monitoring (Zone II), WWTF monitoring and down-gradient monitoring;

Wastewater Recycling
Irrigation water for the golf courses is drawn from the groundwater by four interceptor wells located down gradient from the facility (within Great Island). The interceptor wells pump the groundwater (purified to drinking water standards) into a manmade 4-acre irrigation pond located along the 2nd hole of the Nicklaus Design Course. Water from the irrigation pond is then used to water the golf course.
Here's what the interceptor well in front of the Great Island clubhouse looks like;

Irrigation water for Great Island common areas is also drawn from the groundwater by two interceptor wells located down gradient from the wastewater treatment facility (within Great Island).

Cottage Cove Well - 250 gallons / minute

Permit compliance / monitoring consumes almost 20% of the annual operating budget of the treatment plant.
