Great Island Forest

The aerial photo below, taken in the spring of 2001 before leaf-out, shows the areas with heavy pine forestation (dark green), barren areas (mixed) and areas with deciduous trees (brown).

White Pine

Thick pine forest (white pine) is limited to the northern portion of the community.

Pine Barrens

The (yet to be built) Great Island neighborhood west of The Pinehills Waste Water Treatment Plant, the Picket Fense neighborhood and some of the (yet to be built) Clam Pudding Pond neighborhood are classified as a pine barrens consisting of primarily pitch pine.

The image below shows the location of the pine barrens within Great Island as of 2001. Most of these areas will be developed as the community builds out, leaving only small areas of pine barrens in the remaining undistrubed open space.
