Your Garage Door Opener
"Overhead Doors" Legacy Garage Door Opener - Model 496CD/B (1/3 H.P.)
Do you own the Legacy Model 496CD/B?
One of my garage doors started to squeak loudly when it was being raised and lowered. Upon inspection, I discovered that the chain sprocket, which sits on top of the motor unit, was badly worn. The sprocket, which turns against the sprocket saddle, drives the chain that lifts the door. The picture on the right shows the sprocket that was squeaking. The picture on the left shows the sprocket that is damaged but still showing no symptoms.

Scored but still functional. |
Completely worn down. |
There are two companies in the area claiming to be "The Original" Overhead Door Company. Here are the responses I received from both companies;
Response from garagedooropeners@overheaddoor.com
The sprocket is greased during assembly at the factory. Sprockets typically are greased before being replaced by using the Lubriplate mentioned in the prior email. Some rollers have bearings. We do not suggest oiling anything on the operator itself. We would strongly suggest having the Overhead Door Distributor service and lubricate the door.

I was able to get feedback from the technician.
The cause of this problem was assessed to be the grit from the ceiling.
We have experienced this in the past, where ceilings are sprayed with white popcorn style plaster- as visible in the pictures- resulting in the grit contaminating the inside of the sprocket guide/race.
End result is a wearing over time- where the sprocket becomes defective.
I have the parts I will ship to you at no charge. If you would like a tech to come out- I will need to charge for the service call- $89.. and can install the parts for you.
Thank You,
