A Homeowner's Pride
Nothing makes a homeowner more proud than having a beautifully manicured lawn that lasts throughout the season. By the same token, achieving and maintaining that lawn can be troublesome and for some 'nerve racking".
For our feature article this month, we decided to ask for advice from some of the members of our very own Great Island Garden Group on how to maintain a lawn they would be proud to call their own. Here's what they had to say:
For those who have pets that can bring about bare or brown spots, loosen the top 2 to 3 inches of soil with a rake to provide a good seedbed. Spread a half inch of seed evenly over the entire bare spot. Water thoroughly and keep moist until filled in with grass.
For lawns that are worn down, because of drought or foot traffic, your lawn should be watered and cut as short as possible and clippings removed.
Loosen soil with a rake the day before you overseed. Spread grass seed and rake gently into the soil. Apply fertilizer to nurture young seedlings into thick grass. Water thoroughly and keep moist until thin areas are filled in.
For lawns that need renovation from overrun weeds, or extreme weather damage, remove the dead weeds and loosen the soil down to 2 inches with a rake at least a week before spreading new seed. Evenly spread an inch of good soil over the area. Rake the grass seed into the new soil gently. Apply fertilizer to nurture young seedlings. Keep moist until lawn is filled with grass.
Here's to a healthy green lawn that your neighbors will envy! Good luck everyone.
