Your Gas Fireplace
Model ND4236 Heatilator
You may choose to turn off the pilot light of your Model ND4236 Heatilator Gas Fireplace, either to save the cost of gas during the months when the fireplace is not in use or simply as a safely measure.
- Turning the system OFF is simply a matter of turning the gas valve (pictured below) to the 'CLOSED' (perpendicular) position. You can do this while sitting in front of the fireplace.

GAS VALVE (OPEN POSITION)
This image shows the gas valve in the OPEN position (parallel). The gas valve is turned clock-wise from OPEN to CLOSED.
NOTE: The pilot knob (pictured below) may be left in the ON position. |
- Turning the system ON, however, is much more complicated*. It requires that you lay flat on your stomach with both hands in the fireplace, one on the pilot knob (pictured below) and one on the red igniter button (not shown).
Follow the instructions for the 'Standing Pilot Ignition System' in the owner's manual. READ THE SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
Here are simplified instructions for (re)igniting the pilot;
- Turn the pilot knob to the OFF and then PILOT position.
- Press and hold the pilot knob while repeatedly pressing the RED igniter button until the pilot ignites. NOTE: the pilot has three blue flames, one on each side and one forward.
- Turn the pilot knob to the ON position.
* NOTE: This is an opportunity to have the annual inspection by a qualified technician recommended in the owner's manual.
