Great Island Tennis Courts Rules and Regulations

Revised: June 17, 2009 (electronic copy)

The Great Island Tennis Courts are for the use and enjoyment of all members of The Great Island Homeowners' Association. Residents must be in good standing with the covenants of the Great Island Homeowners' Association in order to utilize the courts.

The tennis courts will be open seven days a week during the tennis season, May 1st to October 31st, only.

Courts may be closed occasionally due to wetness caused by rain, allowing adequate time for surface to dry.

Playing hours will be daily from 8:00 am until sundown.

Court time may be reserved by residents in accordance with the "Tennis Court Reservation Rules" detailed below.

Tennis Court Reservation Rules

Residents are permitted to reserve tennis court time two weeks in advance for up to 1½ hours. A "Tennis Court Reservation Book" is available in the foyer of The Overlook Clubhouse. Each sheet will contain sign up schedules for the "West Court" (closest to the Great Island Road) and "East Court" (closest to court entrance).

When registering for court time, residents must list the names of the residents who will be utilizing the court(s) and a contact name and telephone number for the reservation.

If a court is not reserved by a resident, "unreserved play" by other residents will be allowed on a first come, first served basis. Residents using the court in an "unreserved" time slot must allow residents with a reserved time slot to play when the time comes.

If none of the residents arrives within 10 minutes after the reserved time slot, that time slot will be forfeited.

Residents who have reserved court time but are unable to play must remove their reservation from the "Tennis Court Reservation Book", allowing other players that time slot.

Residents may not schedule the tennis courts for more than 1½ hours of continuous play. Scheduling back to back 1½ hour time slots is not permitted.

Both courts are reserved for open tennis which is available to all Great Island residents at the following times:

  • Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8:00 am to 9:30;
  • Tuesday and Thursday from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm.
These times will be adjusted seasonally.

The Great Island Tennis Groups

A group is defined as two or more residents who have registered with the Lifestyle Director and wish to play at a certain time on a recurring basis.

Great Island registered groups may schedule play and block court times two weeks in advance and for up to one month's play in accordance with the following rules:

  • Registered groups must leave an appropriate amount of time for general play.
  • Registered groups may play at any time except for the times designated above for open tennis.
  • Registered group play will be closely monitored to ensure fairness.
  • If there are other registered groups interested in the same time slot, contact the Lifestyle Director who will establish a rotating schedule to ensure even distribution of court time. The rotating schedule will be effective immediately.

The same registered group may not sign up for back to back times, but may continue play if no other group has reserved the court.

(Note: A registered group is still required to sign up in the reservation book with a contact name and telephone number.)

A guest must be accompanied by a resident when using the tennis courts and residents must comply with the "Guest Policy" covered below.
